Celebrate The Power of Ghana
Dr. Artika Tyner and her organization, Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute, are excited to announce a special 2019 trip to Ghana. President Akufo-Addo declared 2019 “The Year of Return.” 2019 marks the 400-year anniversary of the first enslaved Africans’ arrival in the United States in 1619.
This trip will be a remarkable Sankofa experience of returning home and reclaiming our rich cultural heritage. This is a gift to humanity.
Returning to Africa is a Sankofa moment. Sankofa reflects the philosophy of “go back and fetch it.” It also means “we must return to the source.” With each visit, Dr. Tyner recaptures her cultural heritage and pride. She sees a reflection of her ancestors who paved the way for her very existence through their hard work, fierce determination and unwavering faith.
Dr. Tyner returns to the source of her history and finds renewed strength. She shares this gift with others, traveling to Africa with her students and other community leaders. Another important part of the visit is literacy and donating copies of Dr. Tyner’s children’s book, Amazing Africa: A to Z.
Her hope is that they too will experience Sankofa by discovering our shared humanity and common destiny. Spend nine days in this remarkable country from June 28 – July 8, 2019.
